Bradbury's Letter 'S' Medium

Bradbury 'S' No. 2

This Meduim machine dates to c1880. It was Bradbury's equivalent of the Singer 13 but featured various patented improvements including a larger 'self-threading' shuttle.

These Medium machines were designed to be used by professional seamstresses and tailors on a daily basis.

Stand & Lid

This example features gold roses as it's centre decal the balance wheel is Jappaned.

The treadle stand features a large 'B' in the centre, the pitman is attached directly to the fly wheel, on later machines a cranked shaft was introduced and the tread plate was changed.

The table is straight edged not curved and there are two small drawers with recessed handles.

Letter 'S' Medium

Bradbury 'S' No. 2

This machine dates to around1883 and is in superb condition with only slight wear to the front edge of the bed. It has Bradbury & Co. 'S' No. 2 on top of the arm and the Rose and Geranium decal is stunning.

The table is shaped and instead of drawers there is an accessory box with hinged lid mounted to the right of the machine.

Another example made c1888 and apart from some damage to the Trade Mark the decals are in good conditon.

Like the machine above it has a shaped table with accessory box mounted on the right. However the treadle stand has been redesigned and now has a cranked shaft and revised tread plate.

Bradbury 'S' No. 2

A slightly later version of the above machine which has different decals.
Interestingly we have some family history for this machine. It originally belonged to Bessie Rooke who was a seamstress in London and who probably bought the machine new, it then passed to her daughter Dorcas Crang and finally to her son Chris Wood and wife Val who kindly donated it to our collection.

Stand & Lid

Although the cabinet work and stand are the same as the machine above this example has an extension flap to the left hand side.
